Project Notes

The client need

RMIT University needed a promotional film to encourage students to consider studying overseas at RMIT Vietnam. The project needed to make the exchange experience feel exciting, achievable and personally transformative, showing students that stepping outside their comfort zone could lead to new confidence, friendships and a deeper understanding of another culture.

What I created

I created a 4-minute documentary-style student story following Joshua Barker during his semester at RMIT Vietnam, along with a shorter 1m 23s brand anthem for the wider exchange experience. The films showed study, food, travel, friendship and cultural discovery across Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta, Da Nang and Hoi An.

The approach

The project was filmed overseas with a lean camera kit, allowing me to move quickly and follow real moments as they unfolded. Rather than making the film feel staged, the approach was to stay close to Joshua’s experience: studying with other students, exploring the city, travelling through different regions and reflecting on how the semester was changing him.

The documentary style helped the film feel immediate and honest, while still giving RMIT a polished promotional piece for global mobility. The short companion video used food, landscapes, classrooms, transitions and travel moments to create a more energetic brand anthem for the exchange experience.

More from this project

Alongside the main student story, I created a shorter brand anthem for the Vietnam exchange experience, using food, travel, classroom moments and location transitions to show the energy and possibility of studying overseas.
