The client need
The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute needed a campaign film to inspire female high school students and school leavers to consider studying maths at university. This story needed to show statistics as practical, creative and connected to medicine, research and everyday systems.
What I created
I created a 3m 25s profile film and a 30-second social version about Dr Saskia Freytag, shaped for young women considering future study and career pathways. The film explored how statistics can help make sense of complex medical data, from public transport systems to MRI scans, brain research and gene expression.
The approach
The process began with interview and story development to shape the film around Saskia’s own language, tone and expressions. Because Saskia was also a science podcaster, the film used a podcast recording session as the narrative device, with the conversation between the hosts becoming the voice-over structure for the story.
The production included filming at WEHI in lab and office environments, a medical centre with an MRI machine and brain scan material, Flinders Street Station, and a professional podcast studio. Smart transitions, strong visual examples and energetic pacing helped make statistics feel accessible, relevant and engaging for a young audience.
